After surfing a 20.9 metre wave (the same as a building of about seven stories) in Nazaré, Portugal and campaigning online for the feat to receive recognition, Maya Gabeira led Guinness World Records to establish a category for the biggest wave surfed by a woman. Maya, who is from the city of Rio de Janeiro, is 31 years old. Guinness is known as the world book of records. The feat was accomplished on January 18th, 2018, but the record was only confirmed on October 1st.

The location where this took place is special to the Brazilian surfer, because in 2013, when she was trying to accomplish the same feat, Maya had an accident in Nazaré. She wiped out from the surfboard and became unconscious before a jet ski rescued her.

In the male category for biggest wave surfed, the record holder, Rodrigo Koxa, is also Brazilian. In November 2017, he surfed a 24.83 metre wave, which was also in Nazaré.
