Brazilian Edina Alves has been summoned to referee the 2020 Club World Cup, which will take place in Qatar this February. She will be the only female referee on the field, along with six men. The announcement was made by the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA) on January 4th.

Edina began her career as a referee ten years ago and has been a member of FIFA’s staff since 2016. In 2013, she became the first woman to referee the Brazilian Championship in 14 years in A Series matches. Edina made her international debut at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Other women at the World Cup

In addition to Edina, two more women will be part of the 2020 Club World Cup team. Brazilian Neuza Back and Argentinean Mariana de Almeida will serve as linesmen in the championship.

Neuza has been a member of FIFA’s staff since 2014. She was a linesman on the team led by Edina in the last Women’s World Cup, in addition to having participated in a match in the men’s South American Cup and in several A Series matches of the Brazilian Championship.

The appointment of women to FIFA’s international men’s championships began in 2017, when Switzerland’s Esther Staubli arbitrated a match at the U17 World Cup. In 2019, Uruguayan Claudia Umpierrez was a referee for two matches in the tournament.

Club World Cup

Seven field referees, 11 linesmen and seven video referees were summoned to the World Cup. The group must travel to Qatar one week before the start of the event to comply with the health protocols for the new coronavirus.

The competition had been scheduled for December last year, but was postponed due to the pandemic, and should take place from February 1st to 11th, 2021. Six teams have qualified: Bayern Munich, Tigers, Ulsan Hyundai, Al Ahly, Auckland City, and Al-Duhail.

The winner of the Libertadores Cup, to be determined on January 30th in the final between Palmeiras and Santos, will be the Latin American representative, and will go straight to the semi-finals.
