By January 1st, 2020, all movie screening rooms in Brazil must have technology so people with visual and hearing impairment can watch movies. Among the resources that could offered are audio description, descriptive noise, and sign language translation windows according to the regulations established by the National Film Agency (Ancine).

Small film theatres had until September 16th to make these resources available in 35% of their screening rooms. The same deadline was given to large chains (those with more than 20 screening rooms) to make 30% of their premises accessible.

Those who do not follow the 2020 regulations and deadlines will be receive a warning or be fined.

For everyone to see and hear

Audio description device: with this device, a visually impaired person can hear a voice describing scenarios, characters’ outfits, actions, and emotions.

Descriptive noise: text on screen or on a panel below. It describes the sound that is playing. It is useful for people with hearing disabilities.

Windows with interpreters: a smaller screen on the side and below the big screen shows interpreters translating what is being said in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), a form of communication for people with hearing impairment.
