In several regions of the United States, animal shelters recorded an increase in the number of adoptions during quarantine. NBC News, an American news network, spoke to animal shelters and organizations in eleven American states and all of them recorded a rise in the number of donated pets.

In April, a kennel in the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control shelter, in the state of Florida, was able to donate all of their dogs for the first time ever. The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County in the state of Washington said that since March 1st it had found a home for close to 475 animals. This way, on the week of April 12th to 17th, there were only 25 pets available for adoption, a number considered very low for this time of the year.

“I think it [the increase in the number of adoptions] is due to a combination of feeling lonely and having the time”, said Katy Hansen, the spokesperson for Animal Care Centers of New York City to The New York Times newspaper. In March, the organization launched a program to find 200 people interested in temporarily sheltering the animals until a permanent home could be found. To the employees’ surprise, close to two thousand people volunteered.

Can animals catch the new coronavirus?
According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention of the United States, at present what is known is that animals are not very likely to catch or transmit the virus.
