According to a survey by the research institute Datafolha released on November 9th, 65% of students are finding it difficult to maintain a study routine at home. The data was collected in September and shows that the number of students with this problem has increased when compared to the initial months of the Covid-19 pandemic. In May, the figure was 58%. The survey was commissioned by the Lemann Foundation, Itaú Social, and Imaginable Futures. Close to 1,021 parents and guardians from public schools around the country were also interviewed.

The survey also showed that young people are less motivated to study now than they were when social isolation started. In September, 54% felt unmotivated to study at home, while in May 46% did.

On the other hand, access to material for distance learning has improved. In May, 74% of young people had not yet received activities to do at home, but by September, 92% had gotten the material.

The Datafolha survey also showed that 71% of parents and guardians have begun to appreciate teachers more during social isolation. Additionally, 51% said they were participating more in their children’s learning because of the pandemic.

“Families are following their children’s education more closely, and are more appreciative of the key role teachers play. These are changes that strengthen the initiatives that value the profession (…), as well as the family-school partnership ”, said Patricia Mota Guedes,  Research and Development manager at Itaú Social.

Another issue raised by the survey was food related expenses in homes. For 42% of the families interviewed, the meals that students are no longer eating in schools are endangering the family budget (the calculation that accounts for how much money the family has every month for items such as food and clothes). In the Northeast of Brazil, the figure is as high as 52%.
