Ronaldo de Azevedo, who was born in Rio Grande do Sul state, has a degree in Digital Games and is more well-known online under the name Gato Galático (Galactic Cat). He splits his time between several YouTube channels, such as “Turma do Cueio” and “Desnecessauro” which feature animation series directed by him, in addition to the channel that bears his artistic name where he launches challenges, plays video games, and shares his life with close to 14 million subscribers.

To find out more about Ronaldo’s life and that of a famous youtuber, eight-year-old reader Heitor S. chatted with Ronaldo and even got tips on how to pursue a career in it. Check out the interview below:

Where does the name Galactic Cat come from?

There are several explanations, but the simplest one is that I adore cats. I think they are amazing animals, because they are mysterious, fun, funny … And we cannot tame them completely. There is a rebelliousness in them that I find very interesting. I’m also a big fan of stars and galaxies, so I put the two together. Since it was a name for animation, I wanted something that was fun and would evoke cartoons.

Where do you get the ideas for your videos?

We have a large team. At the beginning of the Gato Galáctico project, I used my intuition and talked about things that I liked, so I focused on my wishes and on what I felt was good, healthy, educational, and responsible content. Nowadays the content is 30 times healthier and more responsible, because we have a team of educators and scriptwriters, and we filter anything that could be irresponsible in terms of our audience. The more people are watching, the more we need to be responsible and send good messages.

How did you come to draw so well?

I do not draw well; I know millions of people who draw better than me. But I have always had a creative sensibility – perhaps not for drawing itself, but for creating in general, how to create characters, worlds, and the relationships among characters. It’s something I have been doing since I was a child. Because I didn’t have many friends during my childhood, I created characters so that in a way, they would be my friends, and I wouldn’t feel so alone. I ended up developing a greater artistic sensibility to be able to create, imagine, and put it all on paper or on YouTube.

Have you thought about doing anything else related to art?

Even though I don’t show much of that side of my personal life on YouTube, I have a degree in Digital Games and a master’s degree [a course that is done after finishing college] in illustration. I followed an academic path in the arts, but I didn’t want to do a PhD because my career took off before that. But I did 3D animation, I’ve worked on animated films and I’ve done a lot of things related to art. I was doing well in other things, but I did better on YouTube so I focused on it. Today, in addition to the Gato Galáctico channel, there is also Turma do Cueio, which is the animation channel where I am a director, and the Desnecessauro channel, which we will also launch, and is an animation series that I direct. There will also be a lot of animation that I will be directing that is yet to be released, it will be awesome!

One day I will be a youtuber just like you. What did you do to become such a successful youtuber?

I don’t know [laughs], I think that’s what you will have to tell me. I try hard, I try to take on the greatest number of responsibilities. I have fun and I would like to think that we are doing something for the future, mainly for the future of the children and teenagers who follow us. So I would really like to pass on good values and positive messages. If you think that’s good, then that makes me very happy!

What do you do for fun?

Nowadays I really like to exercise. Because I’m so involved in what is digital, I’m almost always sitting in a chair. So, when I have free time, I like to run, do weight training, or play football.
