In 2013, the blobfish was voted the world’s ugliest fish for its gelatinous, wrinkled appearance, and its characteristic large nose. However, more than a decade later, it has received a much better title: fish of the year. The voting, organized by New Zealand’s Mountains to Sea Conservation Fund, had a hotly contested dispute with the clockfish, but the blobfish came out victorious thanks to a radio campaign. The goal of the competition is to raise awareness about the country’s marine life and the importance of conserving its fragile ecosystem.
