In 2020, Rio de Janeiro will be UNESCO’s (United Nation’s Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and the UIA’s (International Union of Architects) first World Capital of Architecture. Because of its new title, the city will host global debates on urban planning and sustainability to encourage the mix of culture and architecture to develop new ideas.

Rio de Janeiro was chosen because it combines local nature with culture and architecture (historical as well as modern). Another point that favoured its nomination was the fact that Rio is a city where many live in places with challenging conditions. The idea is that participating professionals suggest changes to improve city residents’ life quality during the UIA’s world conference in 2020.

Check out the places where architecture is highlighted by UNESCO and UIA can be seen:

Municipal Theater: inspired by the Paris Opera in France, it was inaugurated in 1909. After undergoing remodeling in 2009, it became one of the major performance halls in Brazil.

Santa Teresa neighborhood: part of “old Rio de Janeiro.” That is where the Parque das Ruinas (Wreck Park) and the remains of the mansion that hosted famous artists’ exhibitions are located. It is one of the largest cultural centres in the city.

Rodrigo de Freitas Lake: excellent area for walking and viewing the city and its buildings because it is situated among Ipanema, Copacabana, and Leblon (some of Rio’s most well-known neighbourhoods).

Maracanã Stadium: one does not need to be a football fan to enjoy the visit. The stadium receives visitors even on days when there are no games or shows.

Museu do Amanhã (Tomorrow’s Museum): its outside structure is designed to accommodate the landscape around it. On the inside, an exhibit explores challenges and opportunities for humanity based on sustainability.
