A five-year-old female otter, nicknamed Otter 841, is making a splash on the coast of Santa Cruz, a town in California, in the United States. The animal was born and raised in the Monterey Bay aquarium but is now living in the sea and shows unusual behavior.

On July 17th, a man said that the otter tried to pull away his surfboard by biting into it. In the last few weeks, different surfers have also described surprise attacks by 841. The problems she has caused are not new: the otter started “stealing” surfboards in 2021.

Of course, these animals appear to be afraid of humans. For this reason, Otter 841’s behavior is considered unusual for the species. Before this issue when to press, local authorities responsible for marine animals were still trying to capture her, with no success.
