A thermometer that turns into a flying skateboard. A mask that serves as a volleyball net. A laptop that shows people in a quarantined building. These are some of the miniatures in the “Stay Safe” collection published on Japanese artist Tanaka Tatsuya’s social media on July 30th. The objects are part of a ten-photo series and are of two types: unusual creations made with objects that were in the spotlight during the pandemic (such as masks and thermometers); or objects made from items that we find at home (laptops and chocolates, for example) and that portray daily life during Covid-19.

On his social media, Tatsuya usually publishes daily miniatures made with everyday items. This led the work to be called “Miniature Calendar”. He has over 2.5 million Instagram followers and around 350 thousand on Twitter. In addition to what he does online, the artist holds exhibitions where he displays his work to the public. The last one, “Life in Miniature: The World of Similarities by Tatsuya Tanaka”, has already been exhibited in Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong and has been seen by more than a million people.

“Everyone must have had thoughts like these before: ‘Broccoli and parsley may sometimes look like a forest of trees, and tree leaves floating on the surface of water may sometimes look like little boats,'” says Tatsuya, in a note published on his official website. “Everyday occurrences seen from a miniature perspective can bring us lots of fun thoughts. I wanted to take this way of thinking and express it through photographs, so I started to put together a ‘Miniature Calendar’.”
