Frenchman Jean-Jacques Savin crossed the Atlantic Ocean using a wooden barrel that did not have a motor.
Frenchman Jean-Jacques Savin crossed the Atlantic Ocean using a wooden barrel that did not have a motor. The barrel was moved only by the wind and the ocean tide. Jean-Jacques left from the Canary Islands (Spanish territory) on December 26th. He hoped to arrive in the Caribbean in March, but the trip took a month longer than that.
The biggest problem was that the adventurer was not prepared for a longer trip. After about three months, he did not have food anymore. Jean-Jacques had to fish, but he did not have enough equipment for that either. He had to ask for help from the ships he met on the way. Two boats gave him food. He finished his trip in Puerto Rico after 127 days at sea.
