In February, the French Fencing Federation officially declared light saber fights a competitive sport. This type of combat was inspired by the series of Star Wars movies which many young people enjoy. The goal is to encourage children and teenagers to practice sports.

The real life duels use replicas that do not cut like the light sabers in the movies. They have colourful lights and sensors and make noise at every move, so the effect is quite similar to that in the Star Wars movies.

Classes for this type of combat are offered in several French clubs. There are even world championships in the sport.
