On May 6, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) released the 2025 edition of the “Human Development Index (HDI) Report”, presenting results from 193 countries. The analysis considered data from 2023, including indicators of life expectancy, level of education and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per individual.

Brazil advanced five positions in the global ranking, reaching an HDI of 0.786, considered a high level. The country now ranks 84th, equaling the result from before the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the factors that most favored this result was the increase in the population’s life expectancy, from 73.4 years (2022) to 75.8 (2023).

Despite the improvement, Brazil remains behind Latin American countries such as Peru (79th), Colombia (83rd), Uruguay (48th), Argentina (47th) and Chile (45th).

In the World

In the world ranking, Iceland came first, followed by Norway, Switzerland, Denmark and Germany. The five countries with the lowest HDI, on the other hand, were South Sudan, Somalia, the Central African Republic, Chad and Niger.

What is the HDI?

Created by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq in collaboration with Indian economist Amartya Sen, the HDI was created to assess the human development of society in a specific location (such as a country, state or municipality). To calculate the indicator, three basic aspects of development are considered: income, education and health. The result for each location varies from 0 to 1.

Glossary:

Gross Domestic Product: is the sum of all money generated from the trade of products, goods and services in a specific nation. Although it is not the amount of the final profit, this indicator helps to measure and assess the economic development of a country.
