Taylor Swift has finally regained the rights to the first six albums of her career, ending a long battle over ownership of her original recordings. “Every song I’ve ever made now belongs to me,” she says in a letter published on the singer’s website. Taylor celebrated the moment as the fulfillment of her greatest dream, after years of disputes with managers and record labels.
The fight began in 2019, when manager Scooter Braun bought the artist’s former record label, Big Machine, also acquiring the albums Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 and Reputation. Taylor opposed the sale, citing personal conflicts with Braun.
Unable to directly acquire her original recordings at the time, the artist began the ambitious plan of re-recording all her old albums to regain control over the work. She re-released four works (accompanied by the subtitle Taylor’s Version), with bonus tracks and refined quality. The releases boosted The Eras Tour, a series of concerts that grossed over $2 billion (around R$11.3 billion) between 2023 and 2024.
Now that she owns the original recordings, Taylor can decide how to use them in films, commercials and other projects.
