Researchers in Japan have developed a drone that can attract and deflect lightning strikes during storms. The new technology, announced at the end of April, was developed by the Japanese company NTT and can help protect cities and airports.
In these tests, carried out 100 kilometers from Hiroshima between 2024 and 2025, the drone was launched 900 meters high and connected to the ground by a wire. In this way, it guided lightning stably to the ground, to safe areas, without causing damage.
The drone is protected by a metal structure that attracts lightning and prevents it from being destroyed. The technology was tested with lightning up to five times stronger than usual — and it worked. “Traditionally, lightning protection has relied heavily on lightning rods,” said NTT in a statement. “However, their protective range is limited, and in some cases—such as wind turbines or outdoor event venues—it may not be feasible to install them.” The invention promises to help prevent accidents and improve safety on stormy days.
