Can be processed or ultra-processed?
Processed foods experience changes in their natural state, such as freezing, dehydration or the addition of salt and sugar. Ultra-processed foods, such as snacks and soft drinks, completely lose their natural characteristics and are designed for quick consumption. For this reason, they should be avoided.
Have artificially created flavors and aromas?
You know that strawberry-flavored milk? It has a characteristic taste and smell because additives have been added that alter the color, aroma, texture and flavor of products. These substances only serve to make the food more appetizing, since they have no nutritional value.
Emerged to preserve food for soldiers at war?
Motivated by a French government competition in 1795, Nicolas Appert created a method to preserve food for the troops, using sealed and boiled glass jars. In 1810, Peter Durand patented tin-lined iron cans, making the technique more practical.
Aren’t always a villain?
Not all processed foods are harmful to a healthy diet. Minimally processed products, such as natural yogurt, cheese, oats, whole-wheat bread and simple tomato sauces, can even be allies. If the list of ingredients in the product is shorter and has fewer strange names, it is better for your health.
