After discovering that more than 1 billion young people between the ages of 12 to 35 worldwide are at risk of developing hearing problems, the World Health Organization (WHO) published new recommendations for the electronics industry. This happened in February. The goal of these recommendations is to make devices that play music cause less damage to hearing.  The main cause of hearing problems is the habit of listening to music at a high volume for a long time.

The WHO now recommends that companies install software in electronic devices to calculate how much each user is exposed to risk based on what he/she listens. The tool would be like a speedometer used in cars to measure the car’s speed. This way, it would be possible to know if the volume is beyond the safe limit.

Another of the organisation’s recommendation is for companies to include an automatic volume limit in devices and to allow parents to control the function through Apps.
