Because of its excellent performance in 2017, the football club from Santa Catarina state will compete in two categories of the Laureus Award. The Laureus award is considered the Oscar of world sports.

Since the tragic accident that killed 71 people in November 2016, Chapecoense has rebuilt itself, gone back to playing, won the state championship, and qualified for the 2018 Libertadores Cup. The award ceremony will take place in Monaco on February 27th.

In the Comeback of the Year category, the Brazilian team will be competing against Barcelona FC, tennis player Roger Federer, motorcyclist Valentino Rossi, and sprinters Justin Gatlin and Sally Pearson. A special jury will make the final choice.

For the Best Sporting Moment of the Year, the voting will be done on the mylaureus.com website. The Brazilians will compete with American football team Iowa Hawkeyes’ fans; Bradley Lowery, the English boy who was a football fan and cancer victim; Thomas Daniel, a young fan of F-1 racer Kimi Räikkönen; and Billy Monger, the British racing pilot who lost both legs.
