On January 23rd, thousands of people waited in line for up to three hours at the Sydney Botanic Gardens greenhouse in Australia to witness the blooming of the so-called corpse flower. The plant attracted around 20,000 onlookers interested in smelling its peculiar odor, which has been described as that of rotting meat and a mix of dirty socks and garbage. Aside from the unusual smell, its rarity is striking: no plant of this species has bloomed in the area for 15 years. In the wild, It only blooms once every seven to ten years.
