On May 20, Magnus Carlsen, the legendary chess player and current world number one, tied with 143,000 opponents from all over the world in an online match held by the website Chess.com. The match began on April 4 with Carlsen’s first move, while the “world team” responded by collective vote. Both sides had 24 hours to move a piece. The Norwegian set the record for the largest number of opponents in a virtual match, surpassing the Russian Garry Kasparov, who faced 50,000 people in 1999, and the Indian Viswanathan Anand, who competed against 70,000 players in 2024.
