On February 21st, tourists visiting Mar del Plata in Argentina were surprised to find the beach water dyed red and with a very bad smell. Despite the shock it caused, this is considered a natural phenomenon, called arribazón. It occurs when large quantities of red algae detach from the seabed and are brought to the surface by strong sea currents. Though they give off an unpleasant smell, the algae are not toxic, and the waters remain safe for bathing.
