August 25th was the date chosen to celebrate the 20th birthday of a giant street pothole in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the state of Pernambuco. Dozens of residents gathered to celebrate the birthday to draw attention to the problem so it could be solved. They did this with a three-tier cake, soft drinks, snacks, and treats.

The pothole got a birthday song and a speech that described the events “witnessed” by the birthday hole throughout the years, such as Brazil’s fifth World Cup title in 2002. The names of all the mayors the pothole had “seen” get elected and who did not fix the situation was also mentioned in the speech.

The pothole started because of a water leak from the Sanitation Company of Pernambuco State (COMPESA). COMPESA issued a statement saying that measures were being taken to solve the problem.
