A new national document that combines the Brazilian Identity Card (RG or General Registry) and the Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) started being issued on July 26th in Rio Grande do Sul state. States such as Acre, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná as well as the Federal District have also adopted the new identity card. It is expected that all states will be issuing the document by March 2023.

Named the National Identity Card (CIN), its main objective is to make the CPF number the only record. For the time being, Brazilians who do not have the CIN can continue using the RG which will later cease to exist. This will be the case because, before this change, it was possible to have a di_ erent ID number in each of the 26 states or in the Federal District. For example, if someone from São Paulo moved to the state of Amazonas and lost their RG, thus needing to obtain a new document in this northern state, they would be assigned a di_ erent number from the one they had in São Paulo. Now, the registry will be the same across the entire country.

Fraud Prevention

The government also expects that this change will reduce document fraud, since the new ID card has a QR Code through which its authenticity can be verified.

The document will also facilitate the entry of Brazilians into Mercosur countries, as it includes an international standard code dubbed the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ).

The CIN will be available in physical and digital format through official government channels. The new document will be valid for ten years for anyone up to the age of 60, and indefi nitely for those who are older than 60. The old RG may be used until 2032.

At the moment, the new ID card is only being issued to those whose CPF information is up to date. Those under 18 who need to correct the document need a guardian to request the change.
