…cordel literature is very old?

The genre emerged in the 16th century, in the backlands of Northeastern Brazil. However, it was only at the end of the 19th century that cordel developed the characteristics it is known for today.

…cordel has many unique features that express Northeastern culture?

Cordel literature usually presents a popular story that highlights the folklore of the Northeast. It is written in regular rhyming verses, and uses simple, colloquial language. Cordéis are recited by so-called cordelistas.

…the cordéis were sold in parts, like episodes of a soap opera?

The sellers would read the cordel to the audience, in public places such as squares, and when they were reaching the high point of the story they would stop, which made people curious and led them to buy the final part of the booklets.

…the term cordel comes from “corda” (rope)?

Cordel literature got its name because the booklets were hung on a thin rope. They usually had 32 pages, the booklets were bound with a string on the opening page and displayed in town squares for sale.
