On April 1, a resident of Rockport, in the United States, posted on social media a warning to her neighbors about a “vandal” who, according to her, “was wearing a red hat” and was breaking the mirrors of her car. Soon, other people said they were going through the same situation. The criminal was a long-eared woodpecker, originally from North America. The situation led many people to close their rearview mirrors or cover them with plastic. According to experts, the bird acts this way to mark its territory, because it is mating season. When it sees its own reflection, it believes it is facing a rival male.
