Brazilian publishers recorded losses of 1.4 billion reais due to the piracy of books and other editorial products in 2024. This amount is equivalent to 50% of all book sales in the year. This data comes from the Brazilian Association for the Defense of Copyright and Reprographic Rights (ABDR) and the National Union of Book Publishers (Snel), according to a report in the newspaper O Globo published on April 21. According to the newspaper, social media such as Facebook and Telegram, in addition to websites, are the main channels used for the illegal distribution of copies of books.

Close to 2,000 titles are searched for by internet users every month on digital piracy platforms. In 2024, initiatives by the ABDR resulted in the removal of over 154,000 pirated works from the internet. Also, through legal proceedings, the association managed to take down a piracy group on Telegram with 330,000 members.

Recently, a case with great repercussion involved the coloring book Bobbie Goods, published by HarperCollins. With the success of the work and the viral trends on social media related to coloring techniques, several non-original versions began to circulate. According to the publisher, measures are being taken to protect the copyright of the publication.

What is copyright?

Copyright is a set of laws that protect creative works, such as books, music and films. They ensure that the author has control over the use of his creation and receives payment for it.

Globo Faces Piracy Problem with Premiere Channel

Piracy can also happen with TV channels. Manuel Belmar, director of digital products, corporate finance, legal and infrastructure at Rede Globo, stated that the broadcaster faces a serious piracy problem with the Premiere channel. At a press conference, he stated that illegal broadcasts of the Brazilian Championship with unauthorized reproduction of the channel have caused great losses to the broadcaster.

According to Belmar, four out of every five people who watch Premiere do not pay for the service, which represents an estimated loss of close to 500 million reais. The director asked some clubs to collaborate in the fight against illegal broadcasting signals and to increase awareness-raising initiatives for the public.
