Besides their role in cinema, suits used in Avatar films t o c apt u r e movement (made with a plastic fabric equipped with sensors that recognize the actors’ gestures) could have another function: diagnosing diseases.
According to research published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine in early 2023, the technology used in feature films can also be used to detect diseases that affect mobility, that is, the movements of the human body.
Pandora, the universe where the Avatar story takes place, delights people with its variety of colors and species, as well as its different nature. To make it as realistic as possible, the film production developed motion capture suits so that the. gestures of the famous avatars, the beings native to Pandora, are actually carried out by the actors.
Based on this, research showed that the suits, when adapted and connected to an artificial intelligence system, can recognize patients’ movements and identify differences in t heir speed much quicker than the methods currently in use. This way, with this new system it would be possible to diagnose certain kinds of movement dysfunction much more effectively.
The results got researchers involved in the project excited. Diagnosing diseases that affect mobility early on can have a huge impact on the treatment and development of new drugs for these disorders.
