A circle of trees is being planted around 25 municipalities in the so-called community of Madrid, a region of Spain that encompasses 179 municipalities. Arco Verde, as it has been named, will have around 550,000 seedlings and cover over 200 kilometres (an area that is equivalent to about 600 football fields).

The project, which has no completion date yet, seeks to promote biodiversity, sustainable mobility, and social engagement. The benefits for each of these are:

Biodiversity
The initiative will set up habitats that will serve as refuge for animals, recovery of animal and plant species at risk of extinction, as well as help fight climate change (trees help absorb polluting gases from the atmosphere, and it is estimated that the arc will help filter close to 175,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year).

Sustainable mobility
Paths that connect to bike lanes and public transport in the municipalities will be built along the arch. The idea is for people to use these routes to get around and thus avoid using cars – polluting vehicles that carry few people and that are, therefore, not considered a sustainable option for the environment. Also, the paths along the arch will give people the chance to have more contact with nature.

Social engagement
The idea is for the arch to be used to foster discussion and environmental education projects to make people aware of the importance of preserving nature.

Desertification
The green wall is part of a project by the Community of Madrid to make the region more sustainable. Scientists claim that, due to climate change, southern Europe, where Spain is located, is threatened by desertification in the coming years.

Desertification is a phenomenon where an area that previously had vegetation becomes a desert. This can happen due to natural causes or human activity. Activities such as deforestation, mining, and farming can damage the soil, causing it to lose nutrients and harm plant growth. As a result, vegetation starts being replaced by deserts.
