Lucas B. L. is only 15 years old, but he has already started preparing for a career in voice acting. He finished the introductory course in dubbing at the end of 2019. Born in São Paulo, the young man has always been interested in the subject. Ever since he was young, he has imitated children’s voices and enjoyed singing TV commercial jingles.

He told junior reporters 12-year-old Carolina R., 11-year-old Lívia A., and 10-year-old Olivia S. that he chose this profession because he is shy and as a voice actor, he does not need to show his face to the public. Below, find out more about Lucas’ story and his plans for the future.

Why did you choose to work with dubbing?
Because it is an interesting field; it does not expose me the same way that other areas in art generally would. It only showcases your voice. So, for people who are very shy, like me, dubbing is easier.

How did you discover dubbing?
I discovered a channel on YouTube that interviews voice actors. I started to follow it, and I became interested. I looked up a course, and I signed up for it.

Do you have an idol in the world of dubbing?
Yes! His name is Guilherme Briggs. He did the voice over for a character in my favourite movie: Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.

Is there a character that you would really like to dub?
Buzz Lightyear, like Guilherme Briggs did.

What is the introductory course to voice acting like?
The course is made up of modules. Each module focuses on one thing: animation, foreign movies, reality shows, anything that might be on TV.

Which branch of voice acting do you think of going into?
Series, movies…. I think they are cool. Watching productions before everyone else in the world is also cool, because we get the video and the script first so we can dub it.

What do your friends think of you being a voice actor?
They think it is boring, because they see it differently. They do not consider it as being the work of an actor.

What do you think about that?
I think it is unpleasant, because people ask: “What do you do?”. I say: “I am an artist.” However, they still ask: “But, really, what do you do for work?”. Being an artist is work like any other and it also requires a lot of disposition.

Is there any major difference between dubbing animation and live-action [movies made with real actors]?
Yes, in animation my voice stands out more because it is more childlike. And in live-action, in which there are more adults, my voice does not fit in as well. Dubbing works as a line-up: someone thinks your voice matches the character and lines you up for it. So, working with animation is easier. Dubbing cartoons is cooler, because you have been watching them your whole life (laughs).

How long does it take you to dub an episode?
It takes two to three hours to dub a 20-minute-episode as a main character, for example.

And all the characters are together during the voiceover?
It depends. If it is a scene with a song that everyone will sing, then we are all there so the voices are recorded together for the scene. But if it is a conversation, I will go at a certain time and the other person in the dialogue will go at another.

What are your plans for the future?
First, I have to take a drama course to obtain the required document [from the DRT = Regional Work Precinct] to dub. I am going to take more singing lessons, because dubbing is also associated with singing, in a musical, for example. And, afterwards, I want to move on with my career, because I can only start when I am 18.

Why do you need to take a drama course to be a voice actor?
Because we need to express the emotion that the character is feeling. If he is happy or in pain, the voice needs to convey this. And a drama class teaches this.
