Furniture, appliances, and a large amount of trash was collected through a group effort carried out on the beaches and streets of Fernando de Noronha island (Pernambuco state) on January 26th. The archipelago is known for its beautiful landscape and its diversity of animal and plant species.

Organised by Universo, the company in charge of cleaning the island. the campaign collected 13.9 tonnes of waste. That is approximately the weight of two African Savanna (or bush) elephants. In December 2018, another group effort on the archipelago engaged residents, tourists, and children. They all got together to remove trash from Conceição beach, one of the most visited beaches. Even a refrigerator was found polluting its sand.

The initiative carried out by the Home Inns Association of Noronha collected hundreds of straws, disposable cups and plastic bottles, among other objects.

Fernando de Noronha has also become the first place in Brazil to ban disposable plastic. This includes cups, flatware, plates, plastic bottles, straws, shopping bags, packaging, and plastic containers. The move, which was announced by the authorities in December, will go into effect in April.

Supporters of the initiative say that the ban will be important to reduce the amount of waste on the archipelago and prevent animals from eating plastic.

Those who do not agree with the decision say that the new law is too radical and that there are other ways of minimising the impact of plastic on nature, such as to invest more in recycling.
