English magazines estimate that Prince Harry’s wedding to American actress Meghan Markle cost close to 156 million reais. The ceremony was held on May 19th at Saint George’s chapel in England. It was paid for by the British royal family, which traditionally covers all the expenses for these events, including the decoration, invitations, cake, receptions, honeymoon, and security.

But where do the funds for the British royals’ expenses and luxury weddings come from? The family headed by Queen Elizabeth II owns land and real estate, mostly in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. A part of the profits from these properties (15-25%) go to the Queen and her family to pay for official trips, security, staff, and palace maintenance. The rest goes to the country’s treasury.

According to the English network BBC, it is estimated that the Queen will receive close to 40 billion reais to cover expenses in 2018 and 2019. The Queen’s son and the first in line for the throne, Prince Charles, gets more than 6 million reais per year.

The royals also have their own personal fortune. For example, the Queen owns stamps, jewelry, and horses. The crown’s assets belong to the monarch during his/her reign and cannot be sold. They are handed down from one generation to the next.
