The dream of flying with your own wings could be close to coming true. GoFly, a contest sponsored by Boeing, was launched to encourage the development of personal flying devices.

The jetpacks will be developed over the next two years and have to be safe, ultra-compact, quiet, and environmentally friendly. The flying device should also be able to transport a passenger for close to 30 kilometres before having to re-fuel.

The best ideas will compete for prizes that together total close to two million dollars.

Flying Contraptions

– In the 1960s, the first experiments with jetpacks started.
– In 2001’s Rio Carnival, an astronaut’s body double flew around for 30 seconds in a model built by NASA.
– British Richard Browning recently developed clothing similar to that of the Ironman. Because of its weight, however, a lot of physical strength is required to control the six mini turbines.
– The New Zealand company Martin Jetpack created a device that can fly 20 kilometres for 30 minutes carrying up to 100 kilos. To fly for half-an-hour, it requires 20 litres of fuel.

Questions

– Do you think we are close to having a machine that helps man fly?
– The article says that machines created for the contest have to fly 30 kilometres in order to compete for the prize. Would that distance be far enough for you to fly?
