The case was recorded by cameras on the island of Jicarón, Panama, and described in a study published on May 19 in the journal Current Biology. Between 2022 and 2023, ecologist Zoë Goldsborough and her team from the Max Planck Institute in Germany recorded five capuchin monkeys carrying 11 baby howler monkeys. The researchers also identified the parents calling for their lost babies. According to the team, this behavior may be a “fad” among bored young capuchin monkeys, since the island offers plenty of food and few predators. This is the first time that a species has been documented repeatedly kidnapping babies from another.
