For the first time ever, women will act as referees in a men’s soccer World Cup. Neuza Inês Back from Santa Catarina state is one of them. The list with the referee team for the Qatar Cup was released on May 19th by the International Football Federation (FIFA).
Neuza already participated in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, the 2019 Women’s World Cup, and the 2020 Club World Cup. She will be part of the referee team together with fi ve other women: Stéphanie Frappart from France; Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda; Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan; Kren Díaz Medina from Mexico, and Kathryn Nesbitt from the United States. As in the previous two World Cups, Neuza will be an assistant referee. This means that she must serve as a linesman, who is responsible for helping the referee call fouls and o_ sides, for example.
“(…) In this way, we clearly emphasize that it is quality that counts for us and not gender. I would hope that in the future, the selection of elite women’s match o_ cials for important men’s competitions will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational,” said the Chairman of FIFA’s referee committee, Pierluigi Collina, in a statement. Even with this measure, the number of female referees is still much lower than that of males. In Qatar, there will be six women and 123 men.
In addition to Neuza, other Brazilians were chosen for the 2022 World Cup: referees Raphael Claus and Wilton Sampaio and assistants Bruno Boschilia, Bruno Pires, Danilo Simon, and Rodrigo Figueiredo.
