The Swiss company Barry Callebaut launched the first pink-coloured chocolate in the world this September in Shanghai, China. The product was discovered through lab experiments after thirteen years of development. Scientists found a new type of cocoa produced in the Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and Brazil whose powder turns the chocolate pink.
Named “ruby”, the chocolate has no colouring or artificial flavouring. “Everything comes from cocoa. It is naturally pink, but tastes like chocolate,” say the spokespeople of Barry Callebaut, which is based in Zurich.
The Swiss company says this is the fourth type of chocolate created (after milk, dark, and white chocolates). The flavour is described as a “mix of fruit berries and delicious smoothness, not as sweet as traditional chocolate.”
Pink chocolate will arrive in the United Kingdom’s markets six months from now, says British newspaper The Guardian. There is no date yet for the product to land in Brazilian supermarkets.
