Fans’ obsession for the Harry Potter books and movies is worrying environmentalists in some Asian countries. Young people want to have their own Hedwig, the young wizard’s owl, for a pet, especially in Indonesia. This has caused owlets, or baby owls, to be removed from nature and taken to illegal animal markets. This is mainly a threat to the more rare species.
To give you an idea of the scale of the problem, in 2001, the year in which the first Harry Potter movie was released, only a few hundred owls were sold. In 2016, the number increased to over 13 thousand according to research by Global Ecology and Conservation. The bird is sold for US$ 10 to 30.
The first Harry Potter book was released in 1997. In the story, the owls are the wizards’ pets. They deliver letters and keep the Hogwarts School of Magic and Wizardry’s students company.
Why Is an Owl not a Pet?
1) Space: the minimum amount of space an owl needs is an aviary of six square metres. One of the reasons why is that before landing, the owl needs to flap its wings at least five times.
2) Sociability: owls do not live in groups in nature. With humans, owls tend to choose a friend and not like other people very much.
3) Feeding: owls do not eat seeds or fruit, like other birds. They are carnivores and can eat a whole rodent.
