Donating 100% of all food that has not been sold is the plan of a new program by Starbucks Canada, the chain of coffeehouses, and Second Harvest, a Canadian organisation specialising in food recovery, which was launched on February 22nd.

The plan is to have products that have not been purchased by Starbucks customers go to charity institutions for free, which would help fight hunger in Canada, where one out of every eight families does not have enough food.

Sandwiches, salads, and milk are some of the donated items. To prevent people from receiving spoiled food, the coffeehouse company says it provided guides and training to ensure food conservation. At the same time, Second Harvest will work with groups that will collect donated food to ensure that it is suitable for consumption.

Initially, the program will receive food from 250 Starbucks stores. In time, the chain hopes to expand the project to 1100 establishments, which would correspond to a donation of more than 1.5 million meals per year. In the United States, where some of the chain’s stores have been donating leftovers since 2016, close to 10 million meals have already been donated.
