The list of finalists for the 2022 Eisner Awards, the most important comics award in the world, was released on May 18th and includes several Brazilian artists. One of them is Mike Deodato, originally from Paraíba state and Brazil’s most famous superhero artist. He is in the running, together with American Mark Russell, in the “Best New Series” category for the publication of Nem Todo Robô (Not Every Robot), which is a satire (a type of work that includes criticism of a certain subject) of science fiction. Another finalist under the same category is Marcel Costa, from Paraná state, for being part of the Radiant Black team

There is also a Brazilian woman vying for the Eisner. São Paulo native Bilquis Evely works illustrating Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a character from DC Comics, and was nominated under the category “Best Limited Series”.

Another highlight among the Brazilian artists who were finalists this year is Fido Nesti, from São Paulo, who has worked with comics for over 30 years. Fido is in the running for “Best Adaptation from Another Medium” for turning George Orwell’s classic 1984 into a comic book. Additionally, the Nightwing publication, with Brazilian colorist Adriano Lucas on its team, competes in the “Best Single Issue / One-Shot” category.

The results of the 2022 Eisner Awards will be announced on July 22nd.

WHY IS THE AWARD CALLED THE EISNER?

The award’s name is a tribute to Will Eisner, one of the most important comic artists of all time. Eisner was born in New York, USA and is 87 years old. He was responsible for renowned series such as the one about detective Spirit (launched in 1940). Eisner also wrote single volumes that were references in their time, such as A Contract with God from 1978.
