Brazil has outranked Canada and is now ranked eighth among the countries that most produce wind energy. According to Global Wind Statistics, Brazil’s production capacity is 12.76 gigawatts. On this list, China, the United States, and Germany are the top three producers.

Wind energy produced in Brazil supplies close to 24 million homes every month, according to the Brazilian Wind Energy Association (ABEEólica). The ten most powerful wind farms are in the northeast, a region that has strong, steady winds that blow in the same direction and are considered ideal for the production of this type of energy.

According to ABEEólica’s president, Elbia Gannoum, the trend is for investments in wind power, of low environmental impact, to increase and for Brazil to produce even more. “We have some of the best conditions in the world for wind energy production,” she says.

How is wind power produced?

  • Large windmills with three blades are installed in wind farms on land or high seas.
  • When the wind turns the blades, the rotor (part of the structure) is activated, transmitting the rotation to the generator.
  • Wind force is then transformed into electric energy.
