The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced on March 16th that coaches and players who played for teams in Ukraine before the war will be able to join clubs in other countries even if the transfer window has already ended in that territory (find out more in the box).
In a statement, FIFA explained that the decision was made to ensure that professionals affected by the conflict have work opportunities outside Ukraine. The new signings, however, must take place by April 7th, in order not to affect the course of local tournaments.
Earlier, on March 7th, FIFA had already announced that all contracts of employees of Ukrainian clubs would be suspended until June 30th (the end of the football season in the country). As a result, professionals were free to join other clubs if they wanted to.
What are international transfer windows?
A period of the year when teams from each country can hire players or coaches who work in other nations. The system was created by FIFA during the 2002/2003 season to prevent too many professionals from entering and exiting teams throughout the year, which could harm their stability. For example, in 2022, Brazil will have two international transfer windows: February 1st to April 25th and July 18th to August 15th.
