French people with goldfish who cannot – or do not want to – take care of them anymore can seek out the Paris Aquarium in the French capital. The two-year-old project has welcomed more than 600 fish. These fish have been treated, fed, and have received special care. The initiative started as a way to diminish mistreatment and improve the quality of life of these animals. It is estimated that many people around the world dump their fish in the toilet to get rid of them. Then the fish end up in the sewer and can become sick.

Reception

As soon as they arrive at the aquarium, the fish go through a monitoring period and receive medical treatment. When this phase ends, they are taken to a tank that houses other fish to be viewed by visitors.

Aside from the abandonment issue, according to the Paris Aquarium director, Alexis Powilewicz, goldfish that are not well taken care of have growth problems. “Putting a goldfish in a bowl is not good. We are no longer seeing goldfish of a good size,” he said according to the website The Connexion. “Goldfish need an aquarium of at least 100 litres, with a water filtration system.”
